The Watercolor Portrait: SimplifiedJoin Xico and artist Julian Miranda for a 6 week course diving into the foundations of watercolor portraiture. Learn how to create dynamic portraits and strengthen your artistic skill set with comprehensive instruction in anatomy, color theory, and watercolor application. Students will have the opportunity to paint live models and finish the class with a strong understanding of what makes expressive and lively portraits.

*Materials are not provided for this course, please come prepared with your own. A materials suggestion list is provided below.

Recommended Materials:

  • Watercolor palette: Holbein aluminum palette (13 well), white butcher’s tray or ceramic dishes.

  • Water container: any suitable (glass, plastic, metal or ceramic) container about 1 qt.

  • Brushes: Preferred brushes are natural hair Red sable by Rosemary and Co. Series 99 but Princeton Aqua elite will suffice.

    • Round size 10 and size 6, flat wash size ½”, Angular wash size ⅝” 

  • Paints: M.Graham paints preferred, but other artist grade brands are acceptable such as Daniel Smith, Windsor&Newton, Holbein. Please avoid student grade or lesser quality paints.

    • Colors: Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Sap Green, Dioxazine Purple.

  • Cotton rags or paper towels.

  • Substrate: 100% Cotton watercolor paper Hot or Cold press by Arches, Fabriano, Bee Paper company, Baohong or Legion.

  • Drawing board or gator board around 11 x 15”

  • Tape or bulldog clips
